About Me
I have probably been a writer for as long as I can remember. I think I may have killed a forest using up all the notebooks I could get my grubby little paws on, including my sister’s workbooks for school. I wrote in everything. And on everything, including our walls in our house in South Africa. Even if it just was my name. Yes, I was obsessed even back then, aged five.
These days I’m a little bit better. But only a little. I always have at least 2 (sometimes more) moleskines about my person to write in. I never kept a diary, but I like for my characters to keep diaries or journals. I carry two notebooks with me for making notes and have started going practically everywhere with my laptop in tow.
I finished my first ever novel for ages 9+ and had a great time writing it. But in retrospect I realise I was so in love with it, I put too much stuff in it, and it needs stripping down and rebuilding. That will be for another day, I think. I am currently furiously editing my current WIP for the YA market and in a nutshell, it is more Buffy meets Dylan Dog than it is Twilight or even The Covenant.
Along with hubby Mark, I run My Favourite Books blog which is where I get the chance to review books and sometimes even give away books from a variety of publishers – both in the UK and USA. I love the MFB site and it’s growing. You can find that link here. We also have our friend Sarah reviewing for us and like me she’s an aspiring kidlit writer and an enthusiastic reader.
I’ve also been known to have an article up over at Mslexia’s blog. I review over at www.sfrevu.com and also a more recent and exciting freelance position at www.geeksyndicate.co.uk where I review movies, the occasional comic and have the opportunity to write geeky blogs about random things in the world of geeks that I find interesting.
I joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI British Isles) and am so pleased that I did. An organisation like this is the perfect buffer a writer needs – writing is a solitary pursuit, and being able to meet up with others of a like mind and attending professional and masterclasses is inspiring – and fun, of course! I have subsequently become a volunteer and run the Agent’s Party that is hosted by SCBWI BI each year.
